Case Study

Designing and Teaching a Web-Based NOC for LDS Family History's IT Operations Group

A short consulting engagement with two deliverables at once: design the Network Operations Center, and train the team to own it after the engagement ended.

UX & NOC Design Consultant, LDS Family History IT Operations Group February 2011 to August 2011 Independent consulting engagement, IT operations UX Research

Situation

LDS Family History's IT Operations Group needed a Network Operations Center: a working system for keeping eyes on their own infrastructure. No existing design to build it from.

What I Built

  • Consulted on the design of a web-based NOC for LDS Family History's IT Operations Group, translating their operational monitoring needs into a system design the team could actually run.
  • Trained the team directly in NOC and UX/usability design and engineering principles and practices. I didn't just hand off a finished design. I built their capacity to extend and maintain it themselves.

The Hardest Problem

Two deliverables at once, in one short engagement: design something that worked, and teach the team the underlying practices well enough they didn't need a consultant back in the room for the next change. Those goals pull against each other. Optimize purely for a polished handoff and you skip the teaching. Optimize purely for teaching and you risk leaving without a working system. Both had to happen inside the same six months.

Outcome

LDS Family History's IT Operations Group came out of the engagement with a working NOC design and the practices to keep evolving it on their own. It's an early instance of something I kept doing later: build the thing, and leave the team better equipped than you found them.
